A Hike Gone Wrong

p.1-2

As I walked out my dad’s grey 2010 Honda pilot, I could smell the broadleaf forrest and dark green grass. I grabbed my black backpack from the back of my dad’s car and looked at the Rocky Mountain peak standing at 14,000 feet and knew, it was time for my to con core Pikes Peak. Standing there in front of Pikes Peaks was like seeing the Northern Lights in the Arctic Circle, magnificent and beautiful. “Lets go!” My father and his friend Mark said almost simultaneously. I followed while still keeping my eyes on the colossal beauty. As I walked up the first stretch of the peak I had to look down because of the large rocks embedded in the peaks dirt covered ground. While walking up I noticed the sight decline of population of people on the mountain peak. “Where is everyone?” I questioned “ its hard to put my finger on it, but I’m sure its nothing serious.” My father explained. I just shrugged and continued following my dad and his friend Mark up the dirt covered peak.
We stopped later on by a 100 foot oak tree to eat our lunch. While eating my lunch, I noticed a small pitch black cloud surrounded by large white clouds. At the time, I didn’t realize what that little cloud would do, and I wasn’t ready for what was in store. Soon later, followed by that little black cloud came larger black clouds, piling up into one big cloud. “Dad, can we turn aro-” Boom! Lightning struck the ground like a glass water cup hitting the ground and shattering into millions of tiny pieces of glass. As the lightning struck it was like time when in slow-mo, then it happened. My dads friend Mark fell to the ground petrified and unconscious. “ Alek, keep climbing up I can take over from here.” My father said. I slightly nodded my head and ran up the rest of the peak. Struggling to reach the top I finally made it. “ There it is, the top” I said to myself. I ran up to the top of the peak using every ounce of strength I had left. “I did it I finally did it” I screamed when I reached the top of the peak. I ran down the peak to where my father and his friend were at. “Is he okay” I questioned “ I called 911 they should be here shortly.”
The paramedics arrived and rushed my fathers friend to the hospital. He then came out of his unconsciousness and was alive. All of us still do hikes together, we have done over 20 of the 56 fourteeners in Colorado and have hiked over 100 mountains in the United States range. Hiking is one of our most memorable things that bring us together.

Even though that day was a tough day, it is still one of my most memorable days in my life and I will never forgot it, and I’m sure my fathers friend will never forget it too.
